Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: How can I travel from Hong Kong to Shantou and Zhejiang? Can I go by bus or train?

A: There are no direct train links among the three cities you are going to visit (assuming by Zhejiang you refer to Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province in East China). To travel by train, you can first take a train to Guangzhou, which is about an hour or so away, and then take a train there to go to either Hangzhou or Shantou. There is no direct train service between Hangzhou or Shantou, so, if you intend to travel between these two cities by train, you need to connection, mostly in Nanchang. It is a journey of about 12 hours from Shantou to Nanchang and then from Nanchang to Hangzhou it is 4 to 9 hours, depending on which train you catch.

From Hong Kong to Shantou you can also travel by long distance coach. It takes about five hours to make the trip. You can also take a bus to travel from Shantou to Hangzhou, but that would be a hard trip of 1,400 km (900 miles) and is not recommended.

There are airline services among Hong Kong, Hangzhou and Shantou. From Hong Kong to Hangzhou flight time is two hours and twenty minutes; between Hangzhou and Shantou it is one hour and thirty minutes.
