Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Is the Summer Palace just outside Beijing? Or is it located in a place called Cheng Te? It's not clear to me.

A: Summer Palace is known as Yihe Yuan in Chinese; the name means "Garden of Happiness and Harmony." It is about 10-miles northwest of central Beijing. The park was initially built for the Dowager Express Cixi of the Qing dynasty, where she would spend her summer time.

Chengde is 170 miles northeast of Beijing, a city in Hebei Province. There is summer resort, also built in the Qing dynasty for the imperial family. In Chinese it is known as "Chengde Bishu Shanzhuan" - literally "Chengde summer resort in the mountains." The estate is twice as large as Yihe Yuan.
