Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I usually take the China Southern flight from Hong Kong to Shantou. But this time it will not work out for my return as I have to get back to Hong kong earlier than the flight arrives. Is there a train from Shantou to Hong Kong and how many hours does it take and how offten does it run.
| | A: There is no direct train service between Hong Kong and Shantou. The closest you'll get is the train between Shenzhen and Shantou. As you may know, Shenzhen is across border from Hong Kong, about forty minutes away from Hong Kong city. What you could do is board the train in Shantou to get to Shenzhen first, and then get a bus or train in Shenzhen to continue on to Hong Kong. The train departs from Shantou about 7:00 am and arrive in Shenzhen about 2:30. That should give you some time to move on to Hong Kong.
You can also travel by train first to Dongguan and then move on to Hong Kong. Dongguan is, of course, a little farther away from Hong Kong than Shenzhen, but not by much. There are a couple of trains that serve the Shantou-Dongguan route; they leave in the morning and arrive in Dongguan in the afternoon; the latest departure is around 10:00 am. After the Dongguan stop, these trains travel on to Guangzhou. So you can also get off there if that's what you want to do (Guangzhou is about two hours away from Hong Kong).
